A few people have said we’re just trying to make money with Aleister Crowley’s face. While we certainly wouldn’t object if thousands of people elected to buy an Aleister Crowley 2012 t-shirt, the truth is a bit more complex.
As a matter of fact, we have made many high-resolution images of Aleister Crowley and a variety of PDF files available for download so that you can make your own t-shirts, brochures, posters, and more. Making an Aleister Crowley 2012 t-shirt is a simple matter of printing the image to a t-shirt transfer (available at office supply stores) and then ironing it on the t-shirt. If you or your friends have the skills, you can use the AC2012 design to create a silkscreen. The AC2012 design is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License for your convenience.
It’s true that we have a CaféPress store where you can buy Aleister Crowley 2012 shirts. We have also made available a limited edition print on canvas, and you can get other things through our store, like mugs, stickers, buttons, postcards, and yes even yard signs! Sure, it’s nice for us to earn a few bucks for all the work we put into this site and the writing on the AC2012 blog, and to that end you are also welcome to donate, but we don’t expect or care that the merchandise will ever be popular, even if it has been called “post-ironic” by hipsters. We’ve only sold a few t-shirts, and that is totally fine by us.
We’re also very interested to see what you do with the stuff you make or buy. So take a photo of your home-made or purchased Aleister Crowley 2012 propaganda, send it to us at aleister.crowley.2012@gmail.com, and we’ll post it on this site in the “AC2012 Pics” category!
The most important thing to us is that the AC2012 image get used. We’re most interested in promoting the works of Aleister Crowley and his philosophical perspective. You see, we find that the popular conception of Aleister Crowley is very distorted. He was not an evil man. He did not commit human sacrifice. He did not die alone in poverty. Aleister Crowley had a message for all people, that we are each born free, as unique individuals. He taught that each of us is the ultimate God, at the center of our own independent universe.
Aleister Crowley’s philosophy and religion represented a dramatic reversal of the accepted point of view of the last two millennia. Because of this, people who are attached to the old way of seeing things do see Crowley as a threat to their preferred way of organizing society based on slavery to moral codes and herd mentality. We feel, however, that Aleister Crowley’s philosophy of individual sovereignty is the best way to preserve liberty in any political system. Because of this, we have created this campaign, which we hope will bring Crowley’s message to many more people, so that his point of view might be represented in the political sphere.
In the end it doesn’t matter to us whether you buy a t-shirt or make your own. We don’t even care if you actually vote for Aleister Crowley. You are welcome to promote this campaign and Aleister Crowley’s ideas in any way that you choose.
